Why is exercise important for children?

Regular exercise is essential for everyone, including children — and you’ve no doubt heard about the many benefits of physical activity. The companionship and social interaction that sports provide are crucial to children’s development. Social connectedness improves children’s chances of showing resilience to adversity. In addition, sports can provide a template for young children to learn concepts of teamwork, leadership, work ethic, and integrity.

Here are a few more reasons why exercise is especially crucial for kids:

  • Exercise boosts the immune system: Research shows that regular, moderate-intensity exercise has immune-boosting benefits that may help children to fight off infections.

  • Exercise reduces stress and anxiety: Exercise is a proven mood booster and can help children reduce their stress levels and build emotional resilience.

  • Exercise enhances self-esteem: As children exercise, their strength increases and so does their self-esteem. They gain confidence and become more comfortable in their own skin.

  • Exercise increases concentration and alertness: Exercise releases endorphins, which are the feel-good chemicals that act on the brain as natural tranquilizers. Studies have shown that endorphin-rich movement improves mental focus and cognitive skills.

All of the DC Way coaches are certified soccer coaches with extensive experience working with children. Our coaches have all passed mandatory background checks, have at least two years of experience working with children, and have received First Aid training.
