Embark on an extraordinary journey as a Counselor-in-Training (CIT) from ages 12 to 13, immersing yourself in the intricacies of soccer sessions. This tier provides a hands-on learning experience as participants work closely with coaches, gaining firsthand insights into session structures. Beyond soccer skills, CITs learn to take initiative and foster teamwork, laying the foundation for becoming strong team players. In this role, you will contribute to DC Way’s fun atmosphere and be seen as a role model by our players, creating a positive and engaging environment for everyone involved. As a vital part of our Youth Leadership Program, your experience as a CIT sets the stage for the building progression through our leadership tiers.

Transitioning to the Junior Assistant tier, participants aged 14 to 15 play a vital role in program operations. Their responsibilities extend to facilitating learning experiences by encouraging players to give their best while fostering a positive and focused environment. Junior Assistants become integral contributors to the overall success of DC Way’s programs, developing leadership qualities and contributing to the growth of their peers. Building upon the foundation established as a CIT, the Junior Assistant level further strengthens your skills and sets the stage for the advanced responsibilities of the Assistant Coach level.

At the highest tier, Assistant Coaches, aged 16 to 18, step into coaching responsibilities, running games and activities. This advanced level provides participants with a comprehensive understanding of different session types’ diverse structures and flows. Assistant Coaches enhance their soccer coaching skills and become mentors, guiding and inspiring the next generation of players. Building upon the experiences gained as a Counselor-in-Training and Junior Assistant, the Assistant Coach level completes the journey, equipping you with the skills and knowledge needed to be a successful coach within our club.

Paid positions are available for Junior and Assistant Coaches, recognizing their valuable contributions to our programs. Moreover, participants in all position types are eligible to accrue volunteer hours, providing them with valuable opportunities for personal and professional development beyond the soccer field. Youth Leadership Programs are designed to empower young individuals by cultivating their skills, confidence, and ability to lead in various settings. These programs provide a platform for youth to explore their interests, enhance their decision-making abilities, and develop essential life skills such as communication, teamwork, and problem-solving.
Through engaging workshops, hands-on projects, and mentorship opportunities, participants learn how to take initiative and inspire others, fostering a sense of responsibility and community engagement!
Our Youth Leadership Programs provide a transformative experience for teens interested in developing leadership skills, gaining work experience, and earning school volunteer hours.
Through three progressive tiers—Counselor-in-Training, Junior Assistant, and Assistant Coach—participants have the opportunity to engage in camps, Capitol Hill League, and Kids Academy, gaining valuable coaching and teamwork skills.
Each level is designed to build confidence, enhance communication abilities, and foster a positive impact in DC Way’s soccer community.
The Youth Leadership Programs are open to teens ages 12-18 who are passionate about soccer, familiar with DC Way, or looking to volunteer in a structured and supportive environment. The programs operate year-round and welcome teens from across the DMV area.
Counselor-in-Training (CIT) ages 12-13

The DC Way coaches are a group of amazing men and women who have obtained a professional license to coach. We are truly proud to say that every member of our staff has exceptional personality traits and coaching skills such as a positive approach to coaching, honesty and fairness with players, a love for the game, a passion for teaching and instructing, and extensive knowledge of games, activities, and skills to develop players.
All of the DC Way coaches are certified soccer coaches with extensive experience working with children. Our coaches have all passed mandatory background checks, have at least two years of experience working with children, and have received First Aid training.
Participants gain hands-on coaching experience, develop leadership skills, and earn volunteer hours for school. Through each tier, teens progressively strengthen their teamwork, communication, and confidence while having a positive influence on younger players. This pathway also serves as a foundation for those interested in future coaching opportunities at DC Way.
Participants should bring a water bottle, a healthy snack, and any specific gear requested in the program welcome email. Comfortable athletic wear, preferably with soccer cleats and shin guards, is recommended for on-field activities.
Fees vary depending on the program level. The Counselor-in-Training (CIT) program has varying costs, while Junior Assistant and Assistant Coach programs are free to join.
